The Ups and Downs of Potty Training

Potty training Katie is not going as well as I had expected.  But then again I think my expectations were a little high for my 27 month old.    She will have good days and bad days and just when I think she may be getting the hang of this pottying stuff she goes right back to the diapers.  And now we are to the point where she is being very defiant and will cry and say no if I ask her to go sit on the potty.   Not exactly the kind of progress I was hoping for.  Therefore, we are going to take a potty time out for a few weeks.

This is what I have done so far but if anyone has any other tips I would love to hear them.  We have used pull ups but those haven't made a big difference.  The one thing I like about those is that she can pull them up and down all by herself.  I have also not referred to those as big girl panties...they are just big girl pull ups.  From what I have read pull ups aren't that different than diapers because they suck away the moisture just like a diaper.  And I am honestly just not ready for the potential mess that will come with putting her in panties.

I have tried a sticker chart but that hasn't been very motivating.  I praise her like crazy and do a "potty dance" around the house after she is successful.   I got a book called "Princess of the Potty" which was a great tool for the first  few days, but then she lost interest in that as well.   We haven't tried any food rewards because I don't believe in them....at least not yet.  If she still isn't potty trained by three I am sure I will give in to the M&M method.

Being in the child development field, I didn't think it would be this difficult but then a coworker pointed something out to me last week.  She said that if your toddler is in a period of "No" than it isn't a good time to try potty training.  Meaning, it is a lot easier when they are in a compliant, accommodating, want to please mommy phase.  That was my light bulb moment, because I realized Katie is most definitely in a "No" phase right now.  She has discovered it's power and is testing it it ALL OF THE TIME.   So, hopefully the "No" phase will slow down soon (I know it will never go away) and we can move into a "Yes" phase and be successfull at this potty training thing.

If she is in the No phase, you might want to wait a few months. I went cold turkey with JT at 29 months and made it a new rule (We now go potty in the pottty.) and it took him 5 days. I will try to find this awesome article I read about potty training and send it to you. Good luck!

She's not ready. Take it from someone who read a book called "potty-training in a weekend" and tried for weeks to potty train my 2.5 year old because she was about to go to a new daycare & she had to be potty trained. Alas, 2 weeks later, my potty-training rebel was at a new center & I learned a good lesson. Just after her 3rd birthday, she got it. Hasn't had an accident since, I am happy to report. You'll know when she is ready because it won't be so hard to do.
