Too Much Milk

I never thought I would have a problem like this but I do. I have an overabundant supply of milk which is causing challenges in the feeding department. About a week ago Katie started only eating from one breast at night before falling asleep. Therefore, I would go pump the second breast (thinking that she was just to sleepy to eat more) but that confused my body into thinking that it needed to make more milk. Breastfeeding is really as simple as supply and demand and the more she drinks the more I make. Well that's great if you are trying to increase your production but in my case it just made things worse. Of course I didn't realize this at the time but now after doing my research I am pretty sure that is what happened.

Most people wouldn't think this is a problem but poor Katie would disagree. On Wednesday she started crying during her feeding, choking, gagging, and frequently pulling off. There were times where we were both crying because as a mom all you want to do is to make your little one happy and feeding her should be the easiest way to do that. That was not happening for us and eating was becoming a battle. The poor thing was getting too much milk way too fast. Now we are trying some different techniques and hopefully they will help my body adjust and only make as much milk as she needs.

Oh, how I wish that I had that problem when I was nursing! Nursing is hard, no matter if you make too much or too little...I feel so bad that we haven't talked in a long time. I will call you this weekend, ok?
